How to Prune Plants Correctly for Healthy Growth
Why pruning matters
Done right, pruning encourages healthy growth, more flowers and fruit, and a tidier plant. Done wrong, it can stress or damage the plant. The good news: a few simple rules cover most plants.
Use clean, sharp tools
Always start with a sharp, clean blade. A sharp tool makes a clean cut that heals fast; a blunt one crushes and tears. Wipe blades between plants to avoid spreading disease.
Cut at the right place
Cut just above a healthy bud or node, at a slight angle sloping away from the bud. This directs new growth and lets water run off the cut rather than pooling on it.
Remove the 3 Ds first
Whatever the plant, start by removing the Dead, Damaged, and Diseased wood. This alone improves the plant’s health and often is most of the job.
Don’t over-prune
As a general rule, avoid removing more than about a third of a plant at once. Over-pruning stresses the plant. Step back often to check the shape as you go.
Prune at the right time
Timing varies by plant — many flowering shrubs are pruned after they bloom, while others are pruned in the dormant season. Check what suits your specific plant before cutting hard.
Improve airflow
Thin out crowded, crossing branches to let light and air into the centre of the plant. Good airflow reduces fungal disease — a real benefit in India’s humid climate.
Clean up afterwards
Clear away the prunings, especially diseased material, so pests and disease don’t linger. Add healthy trimmings to your compost.
